Member Spotlight

Introduction by: Jean Kim, Chapter President
SMPS Sacramento has a diverse membership including new and seasoned marketing and business development professionals from the architectural, engineering and construction community. Each month the Membership Committee will feature one of these members, chosen at random, in the Member Spotlight. It’s a great way for you to you meet your colleagues and find members with similar interests.

Member Spotlight - Lesley Cocores
Lesley Cocores has been Marketing Manager at Drake Haglan and Associates since February 2014. She began in the engineering industrLesley Cocoresy as a project administrator, became a field project administrator, and then moved into marketing as a coordinator at Nolte/NV5. With the encouragement of colleagues, she joined SMPS in 2013 and recently joined the chapter board as a director-at-large. Lesley is liaison for the education committee, will host the informational session for the chapter’s Certified Professional Services Marketer study group in February, and begin studying to test for her CPSM in the Summer.

“I’m so impressed with the volume of resources available to SMPS members,” she states. “There are marketers from so many types of firms: landscape architects, engineers, construction managers, and contractors. There are also so many national resources: conferences, webinars, and leadership institutes —you could overload if you did them all.”

Asked to describe her most successful day, Lesley relates that every day is a success when her team is shortlisted. “Making the shortlist is an accomplishment in itself, especially in a highly-competitive industry like ours. A shortlist means that we have properly pre-positioned with the client and the stakeholders, have assembled the correct team, and have shown the client the right blend of project knowledge and technical detail through an easy-to-follow eye catching submittal. We want to win every project we can (obviously), and a shortlist means that we are headed in the right direction.”

Passion: While it has become more difficulty to fit trips into her schedule in the past couple of years, she loves to travel. “I’ve been to 19 countries and the goal is to travel to 40 countries by the time I am 40,” she says. Her trips have included India, Spain, and Ireland.

Ideal Halloween Costume: “My husband would dress up as Elliott from E.T. I would be Gertie (Drew Barrymore) with pigtails, and our 11-year old pug, Charlie, would be E.T. wrapped up in a blanket sitting in the front basket of Elliott’s bicycle. If only Charlie would accommodate us…”

Favorite Time of Day: In the summer when the sun is just coming up, she counts hot air balloons during her drive from Woodland through Davis on her way to work in Rancho Cordova.
