Hello SMPS Members and Supporters!

Our President-Elect, Marina Hill, is back from the 2022 SMPS Chapter Leaders Symposium (CLS) and is ready to share all the wonderful things she’s learned and what she plans. Marina attended 2022 CLS in Alexandria, Virginia from March 30 - April 1.

My CLS experience

by Marina Hill, President-Elect

Thoughts race through my head as I reflect upon my 2022 SMPS Chapter Leadership Symposium (CLS) experience. Where do I start? What is most important? What kind of leader do I want to be? What am I missing or forgetting?

Diving into my memories of CLS, I am met with so much information I am unsure where to start. I quiet my mind and feel for the right path to take. I'm grateful to have had the privilege of attending CLS. I feel excited and nervous to undertake my journey as the SMPS Sacramento Chapter President. But that is the point: CLS gears you up, stirs you up and fills your head with impactful information! It allows you to create invaluable bonds with other upcoming chapter presidents because we are all on this journey together.

We are a part of a tribe. A tribe that supports each other and gets things done! Our CLS leaders have given the CLS class of 2022 the tools to lead our chapters. They have shared their stories, successes, failures, and lessons learned. Craig Galati's story of grit and determination to keep his firm floating during the great recession was inspiring. (He wrote a book on the subject). Alicia Mojica Washington gave an eye-opening and soul-searching presentation on inclusivity which has lit a fire under me to make our chapter more inclusive. (More to come on this topic!) Self-proclaimed rule breaker, Dana Lancour, provided a strategic planning session with break-out rooms for incoming chapter leaders. Mary Abbajay spoke to Managing Critical Conversations. It was an energizing, get out of your seat discussion. We explored how to manage conversations with different types of personalities and how to direct those conversations to positive action.

So many leaders shared their insight; CLS moderator, Stacy Stout, had us waking up with her enthusiasm before our coffee kicked in! Holly Bolton, Laura Ewan, and Ree Miskimon wrapped up CLS with warmth, support, and encouragement to go out and lead.

It was an experience like no other. I will cherish my new network of friends and supporters and utilize the lessons I learned. I highly encourage SMPS members to consider taking on the chapter leadership role and attend CLS. You will begin to experience a mind shift from doing to leading. It is a time of personal growth, opportunity, learning a new perspective, and finding your leadership style.

I'm excited to share this experience and journey with chapter members. I congratulate our self-named CLS class, License to Lead! We will be ready to start our year in September and take off those training wheels!

Thank you for allowing me to share my experience with you. If you have questions about my experience or chapter leadership please reach out to me at: [email protected]

Calling all SMPS volunteers!

SMPS Sacramento is actively recruiting committee volunteers for the coming year. Our Chapter has so many great opportunities to get involved, learn new skills, engage in high-value networking, and take on leadership positions. In addition to leadership and member roles on the year-long committees, we are also looking for members of all experience levels to help with special “micro-volunteer” opportunities. These include one-time or as-needed help with Chapter branding, content development, graphic design, social media, photography, recognition, and champions/hosts for programs, roundtables, and education events.
