June 2017 Print

President's Message

Welcome June! The summer season is upon us with sunshine, triple digit temperatures, and vacations on the horizon. While our monthly client luncheon programs will be on summer break until September, SMPS Sacramento is still offering more great opportunities to Join, Participate, Grow, and Connect. Please join us for our not-to-miss events for June, including:

  • Budgeting and Monitoring Marketing Expenditures Workshop: June 14th – Our Education Committee is hosting this workshop that will provide attendees with tools to improve profitability and ROI (return on investment). Marketing departments play a critical role in developing profitability criteria and accountability for firm financial success. This session will encourage participants to increase their involvement in the decision-making process, as well as improve team performance.

  • “Creating RFP Responses that Win” Webinar Rewind: June 28th – Our Education Committee is re-broadcasting this previously aired national webinar. Join in-person to view and discuss the webinar which features tips and tricks to develop quality control processes for RFP responses, improve grammar and content, and create a proposal style guideline for consistency.

Please join me in congratulating Caitlin Talbot with Vanir Construction Management as the recipient of the 2017 Build Business Conference registration stipend. Caitlin will share her conference take-aways from Indianapolis, Indiana with SMPS Sacramento at our Annual Meeting in August. Our Annual Meeting will also feature a member awards program to reward those within our Chapter that have exhibited extraordinary marketing, business development, and volunteer skills. Additional information for the awards program will be released shortly.

SMPS Headquarters provides an amazing leadership opportunity for Chapter President-Elects through the Presidents’ Leadership Symposium held in Alexandria, Virginia each April. Our very own President-Elect, Tracy Jenkins, was in attendance and to prepare for her upcoming term and generate new and exciting ideas for our Chapter. In her own words:

"What an information-packed and inspiring few days! I came away feeling confident in my upcoming role as SMPS Sacramento President, and also amazed by the resources and advice available to all of us from the SMPS National Staff and Board of Directors. Between our PLS training, the SMPS National website, and MySMPS, our Society provides an enormous amount of valuable information and on-point advice to our members (that's you guys!). An important new reveal was the Society's updated vision: Business Transformed Through Marketing Leadership. I'm honored to be able to help promote this vision in our local Chapter as we grow our membership and continue providing valuable educational programming and networking opportunities. Your participation (at every level) is what drives this Chapter - we can't do it without all of you!”

As the Chair of the Nominations and Election Committee, Tracy also has the pleasure of announcing the incoming 2017-18 Board of Directors:

  • President: Tracy Jenkins | IEC Corporation
  • President-Elect: Chris Tejeda | Capital Engineering Consultants
  • Immediate Past President: Lesley Cocores | Drake Haglan & Associates
  • Secretary: Michelle Mathewson | Glumac
  • Treasurer: Pending
  • Director-at-Large: Cameron Hagans, CPSM | Ghirardelli Associates
  • Director-at-Large: Caitlin Talbot, CPSM | Vanir Construction Management
  • Director-at-Large: Erin Athas | Kimley-Horn and Associates

If you are interested in developing  your leadership skills and representing SMPS Sacramento, please consider joining one of our committtees. Please contact either myself or President-Elect, Tracy Jenkins, as we are actively recruiting volunteers for the 2017-18 term.

The SMPS Sacramento Chapter would not be the success without the tireless efforts of our volunteers that work diligently to develop our programs and events. As Chapter President, I look forward to continued interactions with all of our membership; we are over 120 members strong and growing!

Thank you for the opportunity to represent SMPS Sacramento!

Lesley Cocores | SMPS Sacramento President
