Sponsor Spotlight

SMPS Sacramento is proud to celebrate the sponsors who make it possible for us to offer a higher level of programming and help our chapter continue to grow. Each month, we will also be recognizing one of our Industry Partner sponsors on the home page of our website and via social media.

How would you describe your company to someone at a cocktail party?

Drake Haglan and Associates (DHA) provides a multitude of services all under one roof. We specialize in the initiation, design, environmental clearance, delivery, and construction management of public agency infrastructure projects. Our disciplines include transportation, structures, water resources, construction management, environmental, and public outreach. We recently opened our 4th office location (Rancho Cordova, Modesto, Fresno, and Manteca) and are continuing to grow!

Is there anything you want to tell our members about your firm that we may not know?

We have expanded our service lines to include water resources. These capabilities include master planning, design, permitting, construction oversight, and startup/troubleshooting for a wide range of water, wastewater, and recycled water projects. Water resources engineering compliments our infrastructure design, environmental, and construction management teams and strengthens our experience with projects ranging from alternative modes facilities and expressway corridors to local roadway widenings with extensive wet utility design and relocation.

What is one fun/interesting fact about your company?

Our co-founders, Craig Drake and Dennis Haglan, started DHA in 2007 at the height of the recession. In the last 11 years, they have grown the firm from the original two employees to 70 staff and four office locations. With our roots based on the design of federally-funded transportation projects, DHA has expanded our expertise into additional infrastructure service lines.

What is the most exciting project in your firm’s portfolio and why?

Each DHA project brings excitement and challenge to our team. A few of our more notable projects in Northern California include:

  • City of West Sacramento | Sycamore Trail Phase II and III Extension – DHA is providing design and environmental clearance on this multi-phased trail improvement project that includes a new pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing spanning US 50.
  • City of Placerville | Western Placerville Interchange, Phase 2 – DHA is providing construction management of interchange improvements along US 50, as well as new auxiliary lane and eastbound off-ramp at Ray Lawyer Drive, a Class I bike path, park and ride facility, 12-inch waterline, and new signalized intersection.
  • Oakwood Lake Water District/City of Manteca | Joint Drainage/Wastewater Feasibility Study – DHA is authoring a study which identifies wastewater service for a rural housing development within Manteca, as well as facilities for future development within City Drainage Zone 39.

What are you doing differently this year to market your services to your clients?

This year’s marketing efforts have focused on cross-selling our services. We have tried to identify larger multi-disciplinary projects that feature many of our technical disciplines. With a goal of developing and maintaining strong client relationships, we hope to leverage our network to provide additional opportunities for our newest service lines.

Why do you find value in sponsoring SMPS?

Marketing and business development are vital components of our business. Promoting professional development through SMPS Sacramento has resulted in increased business opportunities for DHA. Our marketing staff have the opportunity to interact with their peers, as well as provide leadership and guidance to our technical team on marketing research, industry trends, client and business development, proposal process improvements, and branding strategies.

DHA was recently awarded an APWA Sacramento Chapter Project of the Year Award for the 11th Street East Tracy Overhead Bridge Replacement project in the City of Tracy. (see image below)
